Abstract: Consolidation of Wall Paintings with Lime Water. Investigations on the Applicability and Efficacy of a contentious Consolidant. Among Scientists and Conservators, the consolidation of wall paintings with lime water is discussed very controversial. In the present work the relevant literature that concerns the subject has been collected and evaluated. Within an experiment the consolidant and one of its modifications were applied to different samples considering different parameters. It was to be examined if the use of different consolidants in varying applications on different mortars and painting techniques causes a different effect of consolidation and if the introduced calcium carbonate is detectable within the structure. For this purpose the following examinations were carried out on the samples before and after the consolidation: determination of the uptake of water, determination of the adhesive power, determination of the scrub resistance of the paint layers, colour measuring, thin section microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray analysis.
